Next Steps is a special First Cut! event for secondary school audiences. It sets out to explore with young people ways to take filmmaking a step – or several steps! – beyond the Cork Young Filmmakers (CYF) one day workshops. This year First Cut! is providing a unique opportunity for young filmmakers to interact with representatives of third level institution film courses. We have invited tutors and students from several Irish film courses to share information and their experiences. A tutor and student from each college will deliver a short presentation followed by a short film made as part of their course. The aim is to promote greater understanding and awareness of film higher education.
The presentations will be followed by an open discussion during which young people can ask the panel of tutors and students about these courses or more generally about film as a third level option. Next Steps is the perfect opportunity for secondary school students to inform themselves about pursuing film as a career.
The tutors and students confirmed to participate are award winning, critically acclaimed film director and screenwriter David Keating who lectures in film directing at The National Film School – IADT, Dún Laoghaire and third year IADT student filmmaker Jacob Goode who will present his film I Appear Missing; Catherine Murray, head of film at St. John’s Central College, Cork who will be accompanied by Trisha Dennehy, a former student now working on The Young Offenders; Dan O’Connell from University College Cork who will be screening the UCC short film Ten by Jerome Kelleher; and filmmaker Padraig Trehy who lectures in film and contemporary visual culture at Crawford College of Art and Design and will be joined by Emanuele Massa. Emanuele has been studying Creative Digital Media at CCAD for the past four years – and is the 2018 First Cut! Spotlight award winner! His film Ergo Sum will be screened.
