Posted on

From Monday July 1 to Friday August 2 the Cork Young Filmmakers  programme will be offering a series of Summer 2024 hands-on Filmmaking Workshops for Young People, 14 to 18 years old, over 5 days  in 5 locations in County Cork!

The programme is managed by Cork Film Centre who provide professional training and equipment throughout the week and the emphasis is on hands-on film making.

This is an in-person creative, fun and affordable programme to young people who live throughout County Cork and would like to extend an invitation to apply to young people who are interested in any aspect of filmmaking, in front of or behind the camera!

Week-long camps will take place in:

  • Midleton, (July 1-5)
  • Mallow, (July 8-12)
  • Cobh, (July 15-19)
  • Macroom, (July 22-26)
  • Bandon, (July 29-Aug 2)

The workshops are subsidised by Cork County Council, The Arts Council, Creative Ireland, SECAD, Cork ETB and Cork Credit Unions. The total cost per participant is €75. Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, and early booking is advised to avoid disappointment. All places are offered subject to confirmation of funding.

Have you always wanted to learn what goes into making a film? Each workshop will cover scriptwriting, camera work, lighting, directing actors, and an introduction to editing. At the end of the workshop, each participant will have experience with every role on the team and together will have produced a short film as a film crew.

In July 2024 Week-Long Filmmaking Summer Courses will be available in 5 locations across County Cork. We extend an invitation to apply to any young person age 14-18 who may be interested in any aspect of filmmaking, regardless of their level of experience.

The number of places  will be limited to 15 for each group/area and the age group is 14-18 years. Places offered out on a ‘first come’ basis. Interested students are encouraged to contact us immediately, as places are limited.

The Details

These courses are specifically designed for young people and are ideal for those who are creative and have a genuine interest in filmmaking, either in front of or behind the camera. Previous experience is not a requirement.

These summer workshops create a safe place for young people to meet and work with other filmmakers.  It’s all about having fun, building confidence, encouraging creativity and self-expression. Taught by experienced professional filmmakers, each week covers storytelling, directing, film production, script development, sound, lighting, cinematography and editing. Each day from 10am to 4.30pm is jam-packed with practical activities which encourage participants to explore a wide range of filmmaking skills from writing and directing and acting, to cinematography, editing, and creating soundtracks. The young filmmakers will get the opportunity to develop their craft using professional equipment provided by Cork Film Centre.

Working in small teams, young people learn to work as part of a crew sharing roles- everyone gets a chance to explore the creative and technical sides of filmmaking. It also helps develop critical thinking, communication and teamwork. For many of those who participate, this experience can help create pathways into college, university and the film industry and also having an opportunity to showcase their short films at film festival and screening events.

If you have questions, please email and we’ll be happy to help.
