Collage Animation Workshop: Surrealist Comedy

Following on from her popular 2021 workshop, Ann Upton returns to First Cut! in 2022 to present a Collage Animation Workshop with the theme of Surrealist Comedy.
Over the course of two workshops, participants will draw inspiration from the surrealist movement and comedic performances to create animated collage pieces within the theme of Surrealist Comedy.
Participants will use found materials to create animated collage compositions. They will be instructed in the visual and conceptual design of the piece. They will learn to use an appropriate stop-motion app, and will be guided in implementing animation principles for under-camera and paper-cut techniques Participants will begin by executing a limited animation exercise to familiarise themselves with the medium, before going on to design and execute the final piece.

SUPPLIES NEEDED: Participants will need a selection of photographic/collage materials. These can be found in catalogues, old books, magazines, leaflets etc. You should have a couple of sheets of A3 card, in a couple of colours,at least 2, a small amount of blue tack, and a scalpel or scissors.
About Ann Upton
Ann Upton is an independent animator specialising in paper cut-out and stop motion animation. Her work is handcrafted, often incorporating found imagery and collage techniques. Ann works as an assistant lecturer on the Animation program at Dun Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology, while also pursuing personal and directorial projects.
